On the KKK Initiative
The Kur-itan Kontra iti Kinaranggas iti Taeng—or KKK Initiative—is a joint undertaking of the Ilokano and Philippine Drama and Film Program of the University of Hawai`i at Manoa and the Pilipina Rural Project of the Domestic Violence Clearinghouse and Legal Hotline (DVCLH).
First pilot tested in February 2007 at the Fiesta Ilokana ken Amianan held at the Philippine Consulate, the initiative take at its cue from the need to name and language the difficult and trying condition affecting many Filipino families—the condition in which domestic violence is a crucial family, community, and human rights issue.
One of the key obstacles for the continuing occurrence of domestic violence can be rooted to the culture of silence between and among those involved in such a situation—with such a culture providing the mechanism for its remaining in secrecy and thus the difficulty of collectively addressing the issue.
There are a number of alternatives open to those who would like to cut the problem of domestic violence clean—and cut it cleanly—but we need to reach out to those who would like to take part in addressing this issue.
The difficulty of naming and ‘languaging’ domestic violence is a given.
The experience is one in which the one involved finds himself or herself in a set of circumstances that is trying and despairing—even to the point of losing one’s voice, speech, talk, word, language.
With the creative writing initiative, the skills to naming and ‘languaging’ this social malady are being taught, the naming and ‘languaging’ essentially using the tropes available for writers and for those who need understand the healing power of words, the therapeutic possibilities of the poetic, and the soothing power of language used in appropriate senses and situations.

A Certificate of Completion of the Course will be issued jointly by IPDFP and DVCLH on September 8, 2007 during the completion ceremonies.
A bilingual anthology, Wayawaya: Kur-itan Kontra iti Kinaranggas ti Taeng/Freedom: Writing Up to Write Off Domestic Violence—in Ilokano and in English—of the writings of those taking part in the series is being planned, subject to availability of funding resources, for launching in 2007.
